The Motion Sick

Her Brilliant Fifteen

(Digital Bear Entertainment, 2006)

The Motion Sick offers some tuneful and smart indie-pop numbers, often politically barbed, on Her Brilliant Fifteen. The band seems equally comfortable with country- and folk-flavored songs like "God Hates Kansas" and distortion-heavy rockers like "Dead-letter Officer." Jordan Tishler's recording/production is crisp without being slick. Michael Epstein's voice will not be to everyone's taste; it's on the thin side and his pitch control is shaky. His lyrics are often clever but not always free of clunky rhymes and awkward phrasing. Still, Her Brilliant Fifteen is an impressive debut.
